Pritchard Home

When he was 14 years old, Mark's family moved into an old home in a small town near Saratoga Springs, New York. The home was built in the 1830s, in the Greek Revival style, the predominant American architectural style in the early to mid1800s. His own home, built in 2004, is influenced by both Northeastern and New Orleans interpretations of the style. Primary characteristics are Greek columns, in this case square Doric, supporting a full entablature, and a low-pitched roof with detailing based on that of the ancient Greek temples. This home is built on a pier-and-beam foundation rather than a concrete slab. The interior features Ionic columns at the dining room, antique pine floors and a slate hearth salvaged from Lafayette's Heymann Performing Arts Center. A successful rendition of the Greek Revival style is completely dependent on appropriate proportions and details. When done properly, the result offers comfort as well as a sense of gracious serenity.
